President Kenyatta invites Botswana investors to set up shop in Kenya

President Uhuru Kenyatta has invited Botswana investors to set up shop in Kenya and explore the emerging trade and investment opportunities.

The President assured the foreign investors of a conducive environment for their businesses to thrive, the same treatment accorded to local companies.

“In Kenya you will find welcoming and entrepreneurial people, eager to work hard and to embrace new partners,” President Kenyatta said.

“You will also find a supportive Government that believes in a strong Africa that gives priority to trading with its continental neighbors,” he added.

The Head of State spoke last evening when he and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta hosted President Eric Mokgweetsi Masisi and First Lady Neo Jane Masisi of Botswana and their delegation to a state banquet that was also attended by Deputy President Dr William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at State house, Nairobi.

President Masisi is in the country on a three-day state visit, his first such visit to Kenya.

President Kenyatta commended the government of Botswana for the ongoing successful efforts to attract investments from Kenya, through the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre, in areas such as financial services, agro-processing, animal feeds, ICT, hotels and lodges.

The President said Kenyan investors are ready and will continue taking up available investment opportunities adding that his administration will continue to work closely with Botswana to advance the realization of Africa’s potential and the achievement of Africa Agenda 2063.

He expressed satisfaction with the ongoing efforts to further strengthen bilateral ties between Kenya and Botswana following the conclusion of the fifth session of the Joint Permanent Commission for cooperation (JPCC).

“I call upon the respective authorities from our two countries to fast-track the implementation of the various frameworks agreed upon,” President Kenyatta urged.

At the global level, President Kenyatta noted that the two countries share a strong commitment to multilateralism and the reform of the institutions of global governance including the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

He said the UNSC needs to be reformed to reflect the current realities and address the immense challenges that face the international system.

“It is in this regard that Kenya is bidding for the Non-Permanent Seat of the United Nations Security Council for the term 2021 to 2022,” President Kenyatta said.

“We pledge to highlight the common African Union positions and concerns within the Council, particularly regarding peace and security on the continent,” he added.

President Masisi praised the special bond of friendship and historic links that Botswana and Kenya enjoy.

“As you all know, the first visit to Kenya by a leader from Botswana was in 1964 when His Excellency the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta invited our founding President, the late Seretse Khama, as a guest of honour at Kenya’s first anniversary of independence,” President Masisi said.

He said it was the camaraderie of the two countries’ founding fathers and the historical ties that have built a strong relation of friendly and cordial cooperation that have subsisted between the people of the two countries.

“The onus is now upon us to uphold the good legacy that our forefathers have left us for posterity,” the visiting Head of State said.

President Masisi said the high level engagements between the two countries accords them the opportunity to renew their friendly ties as well as revitalize their bilateral cooperation.

The Botswana President invited President Kenyatta to Gaborone for a state visit at a time of his convenience before the end of the year.
